Psychiatry - Non-organic eating disorders
March 24th, 2008 | by admin |Today we start our 2nd half of psychiatry. The 1st topic to cover for this round is non-organic eating disorder. Eating disorders are behavioral syndromes that develop in individuals who manifest a broad spectrum of psychlogical, biological and sociocultural characteristics. They include anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
Anorexia nervosa is characterised by profound disturbance of body and relentless pursuit of thinness. This type of disorder is more prevelent in females than males(because females want to look pretty) and it usually start at the age of adolescence. It is sub-divided into 2 groups, Restricting type and Binge eating/Purging type.
For bulimia nervosa, it is characterised by recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food accompanied by a feeling of being out of control. Social interruption or physical discomfort, after the binge eating always followed by feelings of quiet and depression or self disgust. It is also subdivded into 2 group, purging and nonpurging. For this case, patient might in normal range of weight.
Both of these are related to loss weight, prognosis for them are not very good. So do not try to loss weight by using incorrect ways. They might bring harm and you might lose your life too.
Besides, the discussion of these topics, we went for case history too. 2 students for each patient. We had a short discussion with patient today, and maybe tomorrow we will continue again.
That’s all for today, tomorrow the topic is neurosis. Another interesting topic.

I might be in the category of bulimia.. ahhaha, but definitely not anorexia.
Bulimia? Did you hide some foods and eat them secretly? And then vomit them out again. ~Happy~
